The Wonderful Wildlife of Hullavington!

For many of us, the joy of living in Hullavington is deeply connected to the beautiful countryside and the incredible natural world right on our doorstep. There are fantastic ways for everyone to connect with and appreciate the wildlife around us.

Join Our Vibrant Wildlife Community:

Dive into the local wildlife scene by joining our active Facebook group, Hullavington Wildlife Matters! It’s a friendly space to share your amazing sightings, ask for identification advice, and learn from fellow nature enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned wildlife watcher or simply curious about the birds in your garden, your contributions are valued – especially by those who aren’t able to explore as easily.

Listen to the Sounds of Nature:

Right in the heart of our village, we’re fortunate to have a Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) device! This clever technology listens for bird calls, providing us with a fascinating snapshot of the avian life around us. The most likely bird species detected are regularly shared on the Hullavington Wildlife Matters Facebook group. The first calls of our returning swifts and swallows are always a highlight, heralding the arrival of spring!

Protecting Our Waterways with RiverFly:

Our dedicated Riverfly Testing team plays a vital role in monitoring the health of our local stream, the Gauze brook. Each month, they conduct invertebrate surveys and chemical tests at two key locations. These findings are meticulously recorded in a national database, allowing us to track the stream’s health over time. Should any concerning results emerge, an immediate alert is sent to the Environment Agency, ensuring swift action can be taken. For more information about our team and finding out how to join in contact debbie.lawley@willowdna.com.

Celebrating Our 2023 Wildlife Survey:

In 2023, our community came together to explore and document the incredible biodiversity of Hullavington during our Wildlife Survey. Using various identification apps and keen observation skills, we captured photographic evidence and identified a wide range of species. We’re thrilled to announce that our findings were reviewed by the County Recorders and achieved an impressive 90% accuracy rate! You can explore the detailed results here: [attachment here]

Get Involved! Whether you’re sharing a photo on Facebook, keeping an ear out for new bird arrivals, or interested in joining the RiverFly team, there’s a place for you in Hullavington’s wildlife community. Let’s continue to cherish and protect the natural wonders that make our village so special.
